The castle
The story of The Castle Westenhanger

There’s over 900 years of history at The Castle Westenhanger.

Dating back to 1035, the estate’s roots run deep, with ownership tracing back to King Canute. In the 12th Century, the tower was rumoured to be the romantic meeting place for King Henry II (1133 – 1189) and his mistress “The Fair Rosamund”. In the 14th Century, the grand fortified quadrangular manor house was built by the de Criol family as a testament to their wealth and prestige. The house remained in the family for generations until the Wars of the Roses (1455-1487), whereby it became entwined with prominent figures Henry VIII (1491-1547) and Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603).In the mid-1990s, careful restoration breathed new life into the castle manor house, preserving its fascinating past while beginning a new chapter. Since then, love stories and weddings have become woven into the fabric of its walls, adding yet another layer to its rich history.
